What is telethon ?

Telethon is a registered children’s charitable trust dedicated to raising funds to improve the lives of children and young people throughout Western Australia. Every year common people and stars get together to  raise funds for these sick children.

Last year’s Telethon raised 6 million and brought the total amount raised to $94 million since the event began in 1968. Organisers were hoping to reach the $100 million mark, which would be a landmark for assistance to charitable organisations, children’s hospitals and medical facilities in WA.

So who are the children telethon stars this year ?

Phoebe of Seville Grove (Age 10)

Phoebe is described as a little fashionista who loves the camera and is very outgoing. She is extremely articulate, bubbly and friendly with everyone, always stopping by to say hello to staff when at PMH for appointments. She is very chatty and loves to strike up a conversation.

Phoebe was born with a Cleft Palate and Cystic Hygroma, with swelling in the neck, mouth and face. She has had a number of surgeries and injections to reduce the swelling, but still has a visible lump on the side of her face.  In fact, she had eleven operations before her 1st birthday.

Phoebe is now in Grade 4 and is extremely excited about representing all the kids from Perth at Telethon 2010.

Lachy of Boyanup (Age

Lachy loves the West Coast Eagles, motorbike riding (BMX), football, soccer and hanging out with his friends. He attends Boyanup Primary School and has three younger sisters.  He’s a happy, outgoing child and a little bit cheeky and he gets away with it with his big blue eyes and dimples.

Lachy was diagnosed at age four with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (a form of leukaemia) and underwent extensive chemotherapy treatment for six months at PMH.  Lachy relapsed in April 2008 and underwent another twelve months of chemotherapy.  Lachy is now in remission and doing very well.Lachy’s Mum, Holly is a tireless campaigner for the Leukaemia Foundation and other charities.Lachy is looking forward to representing all the regional kids from around Western Australia at Telethon 2010.

House sold by scammers while australian man  was overseas

Obviously this is gong to put a fear in many “home owners” who  might just be heading out  on a holiday  or then work overseas as it happened in this case and come back to find their house sold and money disappeared overseas  somewhere  as it happened in this case.

Snr Sgt Heise  who was handling the case said “real estate agents and banks should always deal with original documents rather than copies”, which indicates  that there was possibly not enough care and checks done in the whole process of the sale.

Roger Milden hall who was the victim of such a scam , was working overseas in south Africa, when these scammers struck. He owned 2 properties  here in Perth  and they managed to sell one house  and was on the verge of settling the  second “house sale” when he came to know about it by  a chance call ( from overseas)  to one of his neighbors who   chatted to him about his house sale happening.

Reports from online news websites indicates that “absentee landlords”  are quite common nationally  and this was the first scam  of this sort , indicating that this was probably how the scam was worked

Property owner who does not occupy his or her property and either rents it out or leaves it vacant, but does not abandon it. Also called absentee owner

The home owner said not enough due diligence was carried out on the authorization of the sale, since his alleged signature was "like that of a five-year-old", written out in un-joined lower-case letters. It also had a witness signature, with a stamp purporting to be from the High Commissioner of Lagos, Nigerian justice system. He said it was just too simple to get all his records, with details of his mortgage obtained for $35 from the Real Estate Institute of Australia. They also accessed his first wife’s death certificate to help authorize the sale and were able to source a copy of the title deed from Land gate.

With only six weeks remaining until soccer fever sweeps the world, the City of Perth is preparing to transform the Northbridge Piazza into a FIFA World Cup Live Site. Despite being a real latecomer to the world of soccer (or football), I have to admit I’m a huge fan of the FIFA World Cup.

The City will then screen the Round of 16 and the all of the finals matches. With roving entertainment, kids competitions and come-and-try skill tests taking place before the games, the Piazza will be an energetic site to watch the much anticipated event.

Miss Africa Perth (MAP) Contest 2010 will see 16 beautiful African women from various African countries take to the centre stage and compete for the chance to be crowned Miss Africa Perth 2010. Not only will the contestants parade in 3 exquisite outfits (funky, evening and African wear), they will entertain the audience with their various talents ranging from dance, singing, acting and poetry. The evening is set to be full of unexpected surprises and will showcase Perth’s best dance groups and singing sensations!

But the highlight of the event is of course the crowning of Miss Africa Perth 2010. The winner will be expected to embark on a project that will have tangible benefits to the African community in WA.

So what were the student’s upto  really ?

It’s the University of WA’s student guild satirical newspaper, produced for PROSH day and sold for a gold coin donation to the guild’s charity of choice. The most attention grabbing element of the paper had to be the revealing centrefold of Mr Abbott, who looks like he’s out of a sheldon singh underwear advertisement.

PROSH has produced 175,000 copies of the newspaper, which has been spruiked across the Perth metropolitan area.Prosh director Sarah Jayne says they hope to beat last year’s total of $146,000, which came from 115,000 copies sold.

The money will go to Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA, Clown Doctors – which helps children overcome painful procedures in hospital, The Grey Man – which helps fight child trafficking in Asia, The Heart Foundation and Uni Camp for Kids.
