Having seen Master chef Neil Perry in cooking shows on television, we certainly were looking forward to a great experience  visiting one of his restaurant chains “ROCKKPOOL BAR & GRILL”. The Long Passageway does definitely impress as soon as you push the big wooden door and enter  the restaurant from the Burswood Hotel reception area and so does  the interiors which definitely has a posh look.

But That was the only good things ( or memory) that  we came back with , unfortunately for us everything else was poor, the service and the  food. For our starters after mulling over the menu and the chili mussels and fried  calamari , we settled to get the traditional garlic prawns  and the sautéed mixed mushrooms ( which is actually is a side ) as  the starters. The sautéed mixed mushrooms were the best dish we tasted over here , even though  it  was a bit annoying that the waiter sounded reluctant to bring  in the mixed mushrooms as a starter and so we settled to get it  later with the mains. The garlic prawns were good , but i have tasted better and bigger garlic prawns at one of the other local restaurant i visit in perth called “DA VINCI” in north Perth.

The mains was the hard part  to decide  after  pondering over the good selection of steaks, Pasta and seafood we decided to go with lamb lion chops with mint jelly $ 38 & WOOD FIRED VEAL CUTLET . About a good 30 minutes later  while we were enjoying our starters and cocktails. the waiters arrived with  the Veal Cutlet and  told my other half  that her lamb lion cutlet was ready and placed it on her table. My other half then got sus and asked what my order was  and the waiter said that my order was also a veal cutlet. My partner repeated what we had ordered  and they suddenly looked a bit confused and  said they will reconfirm  what was ordered.

They came back in a minute and said they were sorry , but a wrong order was placed and both of them were veal cutlets , the head waiter came and informed us  that he was sorry and they were out of lamb lion chops and would she like to  order something else  and they would make it up to her with some complimentary dessert. Given that my veal cutlet had already arrived and we  possibly were looking at another long wait  for her new order to arrive ( being hungry as well by now) , she reluctantly agreed to have the veal cutlet.

That’s where my luck ran out now, luckily enough  the veal cutlet for my partner was rated “just ok” by her , but i got a veal cutlet that was totally burnt , I thought that i might be able to get some good parts in the veal cutlet .. but the burned charred meat ruined the whole flavor in my mouth  and i did not even go through the whole veal cutlet. I tried to hide my displeasure  as it after all was my partners birthday today  and didn’t want the day to get ruined.

I got my usual coffee for dessert  and my the waiter bought a small little cupcake ( to add insult to injury) as a complimentary dessert for her. I decided i rather drown in a pool than come back to this rockpool for a dinner.If any of you are looking for a good fine dining restaurant i would recommend “The Zafferanos” anyday  its good value for money and just a bit more friendly on you wallet  and still the best gourmet food ever with million dollar sea views.

This year’s event will showcase everything from the drums and dance of Africa to the vibrant Ukrainian Cossack dancers. A number of food stalls, serving a delectable spread of vegetarian cuisine will be open throughout the festival days. Workshops and demonstrations on vegetarian cooking, dance and music will be organised. Also not forgetting, an array of traditional handlooms and handicrafts will be on sale.

Since 2008, the “Swan Festival of Lights” has been setting the Perth foreshore alight with a multitude of colours, rhythms and flavours. As a smoke and alcohol-free event, the Festival is organised by the non-profit organisations The Temple of Fine Arts and Annalakshmi Cultural Centre of WA. Using the theme of ‘light’ as the unifying concept, the Festival celebrates Western Australia’s cultural diversity through dance, music, cultural demonstrations and cuisine.

The witness, Tasneem, who does not want her surname to be published, wants to wear a full burqa while giving evidence in the fraud trial of Muslim school director Anwar Sayed.The woman is a strict Muslim who does not want to show her face to men. Tasneem was an Islamic studies teacher at the Muslim Ladies College of Australia in Kenwick, south of Perth, in 2006. The school is run by Muslim Link Australia, and Sayed is the director.

Defence lawyers have raised concerns about how the jury is expected to read the woman’s facial expressions if they cannot see her face.

He said it was believed to be the first time in Australia that a witness had wanted to wear a full burqa

Prosecutor Mark Ritter told the court 36-year-old Tasneem wanted to give evidence but would feel uncomfortable without her burqa and that could prejudice the way she presented her evidence.

District Court Judge Shauna Deane heard lawyers’ submissions on Thursday as to whether the woman, a witness for the prosecution in a fraud trial, should be allowed to wear the full burqa, also known as a niqab. After the jury was discharged, defence lawyer Mark Trowell told reporters a jury would not be able to “make a proper assessment” of the witness if they could not see her face.

Tony Abbott says he would like to see fewer women in Australia wearing burqas.

“I don’t want to interfere in the operations of our legal system but I have said it before and let me say it again, I find the Burqa a particularly confronting form of attire,” Mr Abbott said.

The Prime Minister this morning commented on the case, saying woman giving evidence in court should be forced to remove face-covering burqas. Ms Gillard said she thought it was one of the “limited” instances when it should be removed.

“I worked as a lawyer for eight years, I ran a lot of cases, I interviewed a lot of clients, having done that it can be very difficult to tell whether or not people are telling you the truth,” she said.

So why do muslim women wear burqa ?

The “burqa  or niqab” is a piece of clothing that covers a woman from head to foot. There is an opening for the eyes, but the rest of the body, except the hands, are covered. The burqa or niqab is usually made of light clothing, and is essentially outerwear for some Muslim women in some regions. It is worn when women leave their homes, over their indoor clothes. It’s not worn indoors in the presence of family

With only six weeks remaining until soccer fever sweeps the world, the City of Perth is preparing to transform the Northbridge Piazza into a FIFA World Cup Live Site. Despite being a real latecomer to the world of soccer (or football), I have to admit I’m a huge fan of the FIFA World Cup.

The City will then screen the Round of 16 and the all of the finals matches. With roving entertainment, kids competitions and come-and-try skill tests taking place before the games, the Piazza will be an energetic site to watch the much anticipated event.

There has been an alert put out for the influenza vaccine  for children under 5 years old. The decision comes after 23 children in Perth suffered severe adverse reactions to flu injections including high fevers and seizures.That has resulted in the indefinite suspension of seasonal flu vaccinations for children under the age of five.

what is this flu ( influenza) vaccine ?

The Influenza vaccine, also known as a Flu Shot, is an annual vaccine to protect against the highly variable influenza virus. Each injected seasonal influenza vaccine contains three influenza viruses: one A (H3N2) virus, one regular seasonal A (H1N1) virus (not the 2009 pandemic H1N1 virus), and one B virus.

West Australian mum Sharon had her three-year-old daughter and her one-year-old twins vaccinated two weeks ago.
They had their flu shots at four o’clock in the afternoon. She told ABC local radio in Perth that things started to go wrong just three hours later.Sharon said her her three-year-old started shaking. She went purple and she was trembling and she couldn’t stop. So she rushed her down to Midland hospital.While she was at the hospital she got a phone call from her husband saying the twins were vomiting and were very sick. So she raced home to them. The little one started convulsions and it was horrific.

“Influenza vaccination is the most effective method for preventing influenza virus infection and its potentially severe complications.” In general, anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting influenza can get vaccinated. Vaccination is especially important for people at higher risk of serious influenza complications or people who live with or care for people at higher risk for serious complications

University of Western Australia school of Paediatrics and Child Health Associate Professor Peter Richmond said that only Fluvax – { [PDF] Fluvax(R) } produced by Australia’s biggest biopharmaceutical company CSL – was being used to vaccinate children in WA. Fluvax (Influenza virus vaccine) is indicated for immunisation against influenza.

Dr Richmond said researchers were trying to determine whether it was the entire vaccine, or just batches, that had caused the problems which today prompted Australia’s chief medical officer to tell doctors to stop giving the vaccine to children. ( Ref: wa today )

Commonwealth chief medical officer Jim Bishop issued a national warning to GPs not to use the vaccine followed a decision last night by the WA government to suspend the free vaccination program for children under five over concerns it was causing high fevers and convulsions.

What is flu?

The flu (or common flu) is a viral infection that is spread from person to person in secretions of the nose and lungs, for example when sneezing. Medically, it is referred to as influenza. Flu is a respiratory infection, that is, an infection that develops primarily in the lungs. Respiratory infections caused by other viruses often are called flu, but this is incorrect. Influenza usually causes higher fever, more malaise, and severe body aches than other respiratory infections. Although other viruses may cause these symptoms, they do so less commonly.
