WA speed cameras – Money Grab or safety !!

WA has just put into operation the new red light cameras that double up as speed cameras , which means you could possibly be trying to get through that amber lights before it changes and if you do get through , you could still get lumped with a speeding fine for trying not to avoid going against a red light. The new set of cameras can catch you for speeding as well as red lights. Check below the list for locations where these new cameras have been installed and DRIVE SAFE

The cameras have been brought in just before the long weekend , makes us wonder is it for the money grab or safety !!

Even if you speed through the orange light to beat the red – if you’re speeding through these set of lights – you will get done for speeding. There is one already active and installed in front of the bell tower on Riverside Drive in the City.

Perth House sold In “Nigerian scam”

The scammers are getting smarter and smarter. the most recent scam to hit Perth has hit ridiculous proportions with a Perth man getting his house sold by scammers somewhere in Africa. The scammers managed to sell the mans house using email and telephone and conning a local real estate agent for a sum of $485,000.

House sold by scammers while australian man was overseas

Obviously this is gong to put a fear in many “home owners” who might just be heading out on a holiday or then work overseas as it happened in this case and come back to find their house sold and money disappeared overseas somewhere as it happened in this case.

Snr Sgt Heise who was handling the case said “real estate agents and banks should always deal with original documents rather than copies”, which indicates that there was possibly not enough care and checks done in the whole process of the sale.

Scammed using Email and Phone from overseas

Roger Milden hall who was the victim of such a scam , was working overseas in south Africa, when these scammers struck. He owned 2 properties here in Perth and they managed to sell one house and was on the verge of settling the second “house sale” when he came to know about it by a chance call ( from overseas) to one of his neighbors who chatted to him about his house sale happening.

Reports from online news websites indicates that “absentee landlords” are quite common nationally and this was the first scam of this sort , indicating that this was probably how the scam was worked

what is a Absentee landlord ?

Property owner who does not occupy his or her property and either rents it out or leaves it vacant, but does not abandon it. Also called absentee owner

The home owner said not enough due diligence was carried out on the authorization of the sale, since his alleged signature was "like that of a five-year-old", written out in un-joined lower-case letters. It also had a witness signature, with a stamp purporting to be from the High Commissioner of Lagos, Nigerian justice system. He said it was just too simple to get all his records, with details of his mortgage obtained for $35 from the Real Estate Institute of Australia. They also accessed his first wife’s death certificate to help authorize the sale and were able to source a copy of the title deed from Land gate.

Major crime squad detective Senior Sergeant Don Heise said the real estate agent was duped because scammers convincingly used email and phone calls to lead her to believe they were the owners. An investigation involving the Real Estate and Business Agents Supervisory Board (REBA) and the Settlement Agents Supervisory Board (SASB) is underway.

The “Burqa Debate in WA Australia”

A Perth judge in Western Australia is set to decide this week whether a Muslim woman can wear a full burqa while giving evidence before a jury in a fraud case.

The witness, Tasneem, who does not want her surname to be published, wants to wear a full burqa while giving evidence in the fraud trial of Muslim school director Anwar Sayed.The woman is a strict Muslim who does not want to show her face to men. Tasneem was an Islamic studies teacher at the Muslim Ladies College of Australia in Kenwick, south of Perth, in 2006. The school is run by Muslim Link Australia, and Sayed is the director.

Anwar Sayed has been charged with fraudulently obtaining $1.125 million from the state and federal governments by falsifying the number of students at the Muslim Ladies College of Australia in Kenwick in Perth’s south.

Defence lawyers have raised concerns about how the jury is expected to read the woman’s facial expressions if they cannot see her face.

He said it was believed to be the first time in Australia that a witness had wanted to wear a full burqa

Prosecutor Mark Ritter told the court 36-year-old Tasneem wanted to give evidence but would feel uncomfortable without her burqa and that could prejudice the way she presented her evidence.

District Court Judge Shauna Deane heard lawyers’ submissions on Thursday as to whether the woman, a witness for the prosecution in a fraud trial, should be allowed to wear the full burqa, also known as a niqab. After the jury was discharged, defence lawyer Mark Trowell told reporters a jury would not be able to “make a proper assessment” of the witness if they could not see her face.

Tony Abbott says he would like to see fewer women in Australia wearing burqas.

“I don’t want to interfere in the operations of our legal system but I have said it before and let me say it again, I find the Burqa a particularly confronting form of attire,” Mr Abbott said.

PM Julia Gillard enters debate on Burqa

The Prime Minister this morning commented on the case, saying woman giving evidence in court should be forced to remove face-covering burqas. Ms Gillard said she thought it was one of the “limited” instances when it should be removed.

“I worked as a lawyer for eight years, I ran a lot of cases, I interviewed a lot of clients, having done that it can be very difficult to tell whether or not people are telling you the truth,” she said.

So why do muslim women wear burqa ?

The “burqa or niqab” is a piece of clothing that covers a woman from head to foot. There is an opening for the eyes, but the rest of the body, except the hands, are covered. The burqa or niqab is usually made of light clothing, and is essentially outerwear for some Muslim women in some regions. It is worn when women leave their homes, over their indoor clothes. It’s not worn indoors in the presence of family

Tony abbot the stud brings in money for charity

Today as i headed down to work, down William street the street was unusually lively and colorful, there were students dressed up as burses , super heroes and all sorts of weird and wonky costumes ( all for charity ) selling news papersand also Tony abbot.

So was tony abbot baring for charity?

You gotta give it to them to put in such a effort for charity. an yes i did with a $5 donation. I was quite amused to see tony abott staring at me half nak3d from the pack fo newspapers they were selling

So what were the student’s upto really ?

It’s the University of WA’s student guild satirical newspaper, produced for PROSH day and sold for a gold coin donation to the guild’s charity of choice. The most attention grabbing element of the paper had to be the revealing centrefold of Mr Abbott, who looks like he’s out of a sheldon singh underwear advertisement.

PROSH has produced 175,000 copies of the newspaper, which has been spruiked across the Perth metropolitan area.Prosh director Sarah Jayne says they hope to beat last year’s total of $146,000, which came from 115,000 copies sold.

The money will go to Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA, Clown Doctors – which helps children overcome painful procedures in hospital, The Grey Man – which helps fight child trafficking in Asia, The Heart Foundation and Uni Camp for Kids.

Perth police put 12-year-old Boy for a stolen Freddo frog worth 70 cents in lock up

criminal charges laid against a 12-year-old alleged to have received a stolen Freddo frog worth 70 cents, the boy’s lawyer said today

Peter Collins, the director of legal services with the Aboriginal Legal Service, warned that the boy’s case was not an isolated incident and indigenous children were being over-policed in WA.

A spokesman for Mr O’Callaghan confirmed this morning that two charges of receiving stolen property, the second relating to a novelty sign, would be withdrawn on the condition that the boy agreed to have the matter referred to a juvenile justice team.

Mr Collins said he would be pushing for police to issue a caution against the boy, rather than a referral to a juvenile justice team, after Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan announced police would offer to withdraw the criminal prosecution on two charges of receiving stolen property. The second charge related to a novelty sign.

“This is not an isolated incident. This is the thin edge of the wedge, this happens all the time. Aboriginal kids are being charged with really trivial offences which shouldn’t be the subject of criminal prosecutions and which should be the subject of diversion processes.

“They are routinely being hauled before the courts. What is means is the dye is cast very young for Aboriginal kids.”

Attorney-General Christian Porter said the boy’s case was unusual and the move to drop the charges appeared to be a “good decision”.
